i understand both can ouput 480p, 720p or 1080i to a computer monitor,
and that the x2vga has the additional feature of 480i output.

are both generally of the same quality? key digital is more well-known
as far as video equipment is concerned, but would require me to
purchase an hdtv connection pack for the x-box.

has anyone tried both or otherwise have any opinion. here's how i see
it:

KX-DB:
has component inputs, which would allow me to connect a dvd player or
other console there if i want to
automatically switches to pc mode (has a vga passthrough) when not
used.

X2VGA:
doesn't require the purchase of an hdtv connection pack
has digital audio output
480i easyview so i can see the x-box dashboard
has composite video output

I have the X2VGA. The VGA passthrough would be nice. I'm hoping to buy a
a VGA selector switch sometime. On the X2VGA, you can not play DVD's to
your monitor because of something about the way the Xbox does stuff. I
actually never tested it. The instruction manual says that DVD's must go
through the output and to do that, you must turn a dip switch (will need a
pen or an eyeglass screw). It seems that you will not be able to use the
dashboard on the monitor unless you have a X2VGA easy view - like function
in another component. The X2VGA does have RCA jack audio outputs. I
hooked them up to some cheap speakers I already owned, so a dolby is not
required.

I thought - for $75, the X2VGA was a great deal - compared to the other
items I saw on web searches that started at $150. What is the price of the
KD?

The V2VGA does not do 480i. Only the 480i Easy View. The only games
effected by this are about thr 1st five games made for Xbox - its on their
website.

I'm happy with it.

hmm. not being able to see x-box dvds on my monitor is a disadvantage.
this is probably because it's not progressive scan. the kd-xb, which
has since been discontinued (and replaced by $250 model) is now $70 at
some stores. it's a transcoder like the x2vga, but accepts any
component video input, such as dvd players and the gamecube.

I did test a DVD. Apparebtly the Xbox plays DVD's in 480i so that it
forces the X2VGA to use Easy Mode to view DVD's. I didn't get the Xbox for
DVD's - so I don't know if the Xbox supports high resolution DVD's. The
X2VGA website says that the Xbox disables 480p for DVD's. So perhaps the
Xbox is not a good system to play DVD's on hi-res systems. I don't know.

I currently own the X2VGA, though previously I bought the key digital
x-blaster. The first thing people need to be aware of I think with any of
these VGA Boxes is that you must have your xbox in NTSC mode in order for
them to work, it will not work whilst your Xbox is in PAL. Now, the key
digital x-blaster is really quite poor. Apart from it's nice feature set,
the actual image displayed is generally too dark in a lot of games, and has
nowhere near the vibrancy or clarity of the X2VGA. The X-Blaster can be used
for gamecube as well as xbox, and does have the passthrough option, which
will eventually be added to X2VGA as I emailed the company regarding this
issue. I strongly warn anyone against purchasing the key digital box, it's
not up to standard as far as VGA Boxes go and you'll be highly disappointed
with the image output.

Just on a side note, for those people wishing to run DVD's in progressive
scan mode and that have their xbox's mod'd, simply download a HEX EDITOR,
any HEX EDITOR is sufficient, then search for the HEX string C7 46 28 20 00
00 00 and replace it with C7 46 28 40 00 00 00. You do this by FTPing to
your Xbox, downloading the xboxdash.xbe to your PC, running the HEX program,
locating the xboxdash.xbe on your PC hdd, opening it with your chosen HEX
editor, then search and replace the HEX values with the one I've given and
save. Then you simply send the xboxdash.xbe back to your Xbox. This will
modify the executable to run in progressive scan mode, which means that you
will be able to view your original MS dashboard on your PC monitor using the
VGA Box, and also run DVD's from the dashboard in progressive scan mode.

loom,
thanks so much for the info!
i am going to purchase my X2VGA adapter today.
i had a key digital x-blaster and like it a lot but it was missing many
features and i ended up selling on ebay a year ago.
the image quality is insane on these adapters folks.
i even have a HDTV and it still looked 2x better on my LCD monitor.
your xbox will have the graphics of a high end pc game with these
adapters.
