...trying to set up a Samba share in MameOX. Can someone *please* tell me
the path I need to put in MAMEoX for roms?

My PC is set up with "HOME" as the workgroup name and "PC" as the computer
name. My MAME folder is in C:\ and I've set it and the roms folder to be
shareable under the names "MAME" and "ROMS". I have my X-Box networked to
my PC perfectly, I can send files by FTP etc no problem.

I think the path in MAMEoX should read:

smb://username:***@workgroup/computername/sharedfolders.

My username on the PC, i.e. the one I log into XP with is "mark" and my
password, say, is "xxxx"

Therefore my MAMEoX rom path reads:

smb://mark:***@home/PC/mame/roms

But when I choose "Scan for ROMs", none appear.

I wasn't sure if the username/password bit was needed, so I tried:

smb://home/pc/mame/roms

No luck.

I've tried various combinations, and I'm tearing my hair out!

I'm sure the network settings are ok in MAMEoX: IP, gateway, subnet mask are
set to the same as those I use in the EvoX dashboard settings. The only
MAMEoX setting I'm unsure of is "Name Server" - there doesn't seem to be an
equivalent setting in EvoX dash config, so I'm not sure what this should be.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Yes, but I don't want to take up space on the XBox HD. Thats why I want a
samba share so that I can have them all on my PC and run them from the Xbox

Ok, so I'm assuming you've got a folder C:\MAME\ROMS that has all the
roms in it, and you've got this folder shared as "MAME" and as "ROMS".

To make sure it's shared properly, from your PC you should be able to
go to Start/Run and type in "\\PC\ROMS" (or \\PC\MAME)-- you should
see your ROMs. If you don't, then it's not shared properly and that's
why MAMEoX can't find it.

One of these should work for MAMEoX...
- smb://mark:***@HOME/PC/ROMS
- smb://mark:***@PC/ROMS
- smb://mark:xxxx@<ip-address>/ROMS (eg,
smb://mark:***@192.168.1.2/ROMS)

Sometimes you don't need the domain/workgroup name, so that's why
sometimes the second one works. And sometimes the Xbox has problems
turning the name into an address, so just telling MAMEoX the address
may help.

You might be able to leave out the username:password bit too, if the
folder is shared so that "Everyone" has at least Read access.

Now I haven't actually tried this through MAMEoX (since I have a nice
big hard drive), but I've used the same settings in XBMC and its'
Samba client.

Hope this helps...

Correct. MAME32 is in C:\ and is shared as mame32. ROMs is within MAME32
and is shared as roms.

After right clicking MAME32 and ROMs folders and choosing "Sharing", then
enabling them as shared folders, the icons for each folder came up with the
little hand icon showing they were shared. However in My network Places,
the share didn't appear. I manually input "Add a new network place" in My
network Places, and entered \\pc\mame32\roms as the address, then called the
share "roms". It now shows up in My Network Places and if I double click
it, my roms folder opens. However....

...none of these work. "mark" is my login name for XP (i.e. the name I
click on when I boot my PC and get the Xp login screen. "xxxx" is the
password I use at that point, i.e. to log onto my PC. Is this the details I
need for a smb share too?

Not sure I undertand this - how would I enbale "everyone" to have access?

It does, thanks, but I'm thinking I have a setting on my PC wrong - maybe a
network card setting or something - I can FTP files to my Xbox no problems,
so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I'm tearing my hair out at this.

My PC IP is 192.168.0.1
My Xbox is 192.168.0.2
My MAMEoX settings have IP as 192.168.0.2
Gateway as 192.168.0.1
subnet as 255.255.255.0
Name server as 192.168.0.1.

Maybe related, but I don't have a MAMEoX.ini file anywhere in the MAMEoX
folder on my Xbox, even after running MAMEoX?
